Old Time Christmas Festival
Experience 19th century Christmas traditions in one of Long Beach’s most historic homes! Explore the 1844 two-story adobe house decorated for the season with evergreens, Toyon, fruit from the orchard, and handmade ornaments.
Living history docents will be on hand to share holiday traditions from the past and provide information on the Temples and Bixbys, early owners of the 27,000-acre Rancho.
Throughout the afternoon there will be opportunities for children to make old-fashioned ornaments such as cotton batting Santas and cornucopias – patterned after those found in period magazines such as Harpers Monthly and St. Nicholas. Following in the tradition of children from the past, they can also craft gifts such as shell picture frames and bookmarks – for who doesn’t like a homemade, heartfelt present?!
Storytellers will share popular tales from long ago, and children will have an opportunity to swing at a piñata.
A visit with Santa will certainly add to the festivities – be sure to bring your camera!
All visitors will be entertained by a handbell choir from Valley Christian High School and the choral group “Women of Note.” Additionally, Michael Archuleta’s “Mariachi Trio” will perform seasonal favorites in both Spanish and English.
Light refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon, and decorative ornaments, gourmet jellies, children’s toys and handmade Christmas crafts will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop.
